The residents of Gusau, the Zamfara state capital, have decried frequent cases of rape on minors mostly below 13 to 14 years of age within the last one month.
Pleadeding anonymity, father of a nine year old girl who had rushed his daughter to the Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital in Gusau, after she was raped by a 46 year old man [name withheld], told Peoples Daily that, based on the information he received from the hospital’s sources, series of rape cases were frequently reported to the hospital by parents and guardians.
According to our source, before his daughter was discharged from the health facility, two more victims of the same case were also conveyed for medical treatment as a result of rape by unknown men within the Gusau metropolis.
The source further disclosed that, “One of the hospital officials told me that, within the last one week, nine cases of rape were recorded in the hospital. We are in a threatening situation pertaining rape on children by matured people. It is very disappointing, and let security agencies and governments beef up security particularly in Gusau”.
When contacted, the state Police Public Relation Officer (PPRO) of the state Command, DSP Lawal Abdullahi, confirmed arrests and prosecution of rapists.
He however, declined to give precise figure of rapists that were arrested and prosecuted.
