Zamfara State Police Command has accused cattle sellers, butchers, cattle rearers associations of sabotaging peace initiative and reconciliation embarked upon by the state government aimed at restoration of peace in the state.
This was pronounced by the state Commissioner of Police, CP Usman Nogogo at a meeting with the leaders of the accused associations at the Police Command yesterday.
CP Nagogo lamented that, the leaders of cattle markets and that of cattle sellers associations are yet to pay their needed contributions towards consolidating peace initiative despite all efforts by the state government to sustain the relative peace being achieved.
“We have witnessed a total reduction of killings and kidnappings to the barest minimum in the state, but unfortunately, the rate of cattle rustling is fast growing even going out of hand, and this, must be attributed to the refusal of leaders of the affected associations to comply with the peace reconciliation.
“If there is no illegal buyers of cattle then, surely there would have been no cattle rustling as the bandits would have nothing to do what will become liability for them in their nasty operations”, the Commissioner has lamented.
Responding, the Chairman Talata Mafara Abattoir operators association, Alhaji Turawa Mafara suggested that, some markets including Gwaram, Bindin, Bingis and Dasadau should be closed as cattle rustlers are selling out their rustled cattle through them.
Other Chairmen of the associations have unanimously distance selves from aiding cattle rustlers, expressing their willingness to further cooperate should the Police and other sister agencies in the state will guarantee their security.
Also speaking, the Chairman cattle sellers, who spoke others minds said, they are being threatened by the bandits who brought rustled cows for sale in the markets, soliciting for Police to monitor both on loading and offloading of cows across all markets in the state.
