From Ibrahim Sidi Muh’d, Gusau

The Zamfara State Chairman of the Councillors Forum, Nasiru Ibrahim Dagaji, has dropped his membership with the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in company of his Tudun Wada counterpart, Gusau metropolis, Bashar Muhammad Mainasara, who doubles as Legal Adviser, Nigerian Councillors Forum.

Addressing journalists yesterday at the PDP headquarters in Gusau, the state capital, Nasiru Dagaji has challenged that, the decision to drop the APC has became necessary following state government’s refusal to allow chairmen and councillors of the 14 local government councils of the state to deliver responsibilities conferred on them as contained in the Constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria and the Zamfara State Local Government Law 2012.

Dagaji, who lamented the state government’s denial on the 14 local government councils of the state their right to judiciously utilise the billions of naira accrued to them since the inception of the present administration said, they have not lived up to the reason and the content of the Oath of office taken during swearing-in ceremony.

He further narrated that, 28-member executive council of the National Councillors Forum of Nigeria, Zamfara State chapter had on the 29th November 2013, met with the state Governor, Abdulaziz Yari Abubakar, to present to him a proposal for the introduction of Zamfara State Grassroots Development Initiative (ZSGDI) aimed at rescuing their people at the local level from hardship in order to gain popularity.

“We also presented to the Governor on the same date, the need to entertain our request for the payment of our entitlements which include the balance of furniture allowances, training and provision of operational vehicles for over 140 serving councillors across the 14 local government councils of the state. Unfortunately 10 months after, we could neither hear from him nor from any concerned government official”, Dagaji cried.

He contended further that the administration of Governor Yari has woefully failed in all ramifications, adding that, he (the Governor) had never listened to any suggestions, advises and observations raised from any quarter meant for the rapid development of the state.

Also contributing, the defecting Legal Adviser to the National Councillors Forum of Nigeria and councillor representing Tudun Wada ward, Bashar Muhammad Mainasara said, 15 more councillors have resolved to follow suit as they could no longer continue painting their good faces black in the eyes of people they represent at the local government assemblies.

Also speaking to our reporter shortly after the formal declaration of the defectors, a member in the defecting councillors’ entourage, who did not want his name in print revealed that the entire councillors of the 147 wards across the 14 local government areas of the state were holding a secret meeting supporting the idea to drop the ruling APC for the PDP.

In his appreciation remarks, the state chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Hassan Muhammad Nasiha, welcomed the development, describing it as a sign of victory for his party towards the forthcoming general elections.
