Both the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) chapters of Zamfara State engaged in accusations against each other as the causes of what had compelled the INEC to declare the last Saturday by-election inconclusive.
At a press conference in Gusau the Zamfara State capital last Sunday by the Chairman campaign committee for Bakura by-election under PDP, Senator Lawali Dan Iya, said the opposition APC being learnt they would woefully lose the by-election, had immediately swung into destroying election materials at some polling units.
Senator Dan Iya has contended that, formidable records have it when APC supporters alongside armed thugs stormed various polling centers and carted away some election materials after dispersing the voters who were on the queues waiting to vote.
“It was obviously unfortunate, that APC supporters were caught on sophisticated devices as they create violence to disrupt ongoing voting processes especially wherever they learnt they were losing ground, they dispersed and even sometimes set the units ablaze.
“They were also caught indisputably at many polling units illegally inserting numerous ballot papers into ballot boxes after using every means of scaring eligible voters away, at some points they even killed our supporters”, the Senator has contended.
In a swift reaction later same day (last Sunday), the leader of the opposition APC, former Governor Abdulaziz Yari, has argued that, the ruling PDP had hired armed thugs with a view to forcefully gain weight in the by-election through snatching of ballot boxes and unnecessary creation of violence.
Yari, who alleged that PDP officials and top ranking officers of the state government have shamelessly disrupted the by-election conducted last Saturday, saying, “To the knowledge of every voter in Bakura, state government vehicles were used in conveying armed thugs”.
He further alleged that, following lost hope to win the by-election, PDP had saw no alternative than to engage in every illegal means of destroying the entire the process so that they can obliterate all traces to show their involvement, while they start finger pointing at APC supporters in that aspect.
“I am optimistic that, with justice and security on the ground, APC will win the by-election, our people are law abiding and peace loving, and we have the total support of voters in Bakura as it has been the stronghold of our great party”, Yari has assured.
