The Zamfara State faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) loyal to Senator Kabiru Marafa, has threatened that the crisis rocking the party at the state level will snowball to bigger issues at the national level of the caretaker committee led by Yobe Governor, Mai Mala Buni, fails to urgently intervene and resolve the dispute.
Speaking to journalists yesterday at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja, former Publicity Secretary of the party in the State, Bello Bekyasuwa, said it got from reliable sources in the APC bye-elections screening committee that its candidate for the Bakura State Constituency, Sani Mohammed Yar’Kofogi, has been disqualified.
This he said is done to favour the camp loyal to former governor of the State, Abdulazeez Yari, whom he accused of destroying the party in the State for his selfish interest.
Bekyasuwa alleged that he noticed a sense of bias at the screening level, which inspired them to come to lay complaint to journalists at the APC Secretariat. He pointed out that the primary responsibility of the caretaker committee is to resolve all the crises in the party, including that of Zamfara, and not to aggravate it.
To this end, he cautioned that if the crisis in Zamfara state is not well handled, it can lead to further national crisis in the party, hence they are calling on the Buni led Caretaker Committee to come to Zamfara state and address the issues before it is too late.
Speaking further, Bekyasuwa dismissed the report trending in the social media that the APC Caretaker Committee has instructed the ex Governor Yari camp to sanction their faction, arguing that the Buni committee cannot descend so low to do the bidding of the Yari faction.
According to him, the caretaker committee has been following the footstep of President Muhammadu Buhari, whom he said has maintain neutrality in the affairs of the APC.
However, he lamented that since the Zamfara APC crisis started, nobody, including Odigie Oyegun, Adams Oshiomole, and the current Mai Mala Buni, has questioned Governor Yari over how he made the party to lose all the elections in the state in 2019.
He said rather, the camp loyal to Marafa is being treated and accused of being the people that made the APC to lose Zamfara to PDP, even when it is clear that they are fighting to defend democracy at the grassroots.
Making reference to the judicial pronouncement on the crisis, the ex APC factional spokesman said a competent court had sacked all factions of the party in the state, hence the need to have congress to elect new candidates that will restore peace in the state chapter of the party.
Meanwhile, there is confusion over the fate of the APC candidate loyal Senator Marafa, whom the faction claimed was disqualified in a report of the screening committee which they sighted, even as they said the screening committee has not communicated to him that he is cleared.
According to the faction, the screening committee disqualified the candidate of their faction, Yar’Kofogi, on the allegations that he did not resign properly in his ex office before coming for the contest.
“But the party guideline is thirty days before the election, and he wrote sixty days before the election”, Bekyasuwa siad.
On the other hand, a statement issued by the party yesterday cleared all the aspirants in the legislative bye-elections including Zamfara state.
