From Ibrahim Sidi Muh’d, Gusau

The Zamfara state chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has registered its unreserved support for the existence of State/Local government joint account to continue as it only legitimately serves as optimized financial platform to facilitate the expected delivery of dividends of democracy.
This was stated by the ALGON Chairman, Alhaji Dankande Gamji, in a weekly phone-in programme run by the Zamfara state Radio yesterday, where he said “Joint Account is the best and most effective financing channel to secure the delivery of all expected development projects to the grassroots levels”.
He threatened that should local governments independently receive statutory allocation directly from the federation account, a formidable and challenging burden of liabilities will takeover priorities of the next administrations in efforts to fulfill their campaign promises towards the development of their respective areas.
The Chairman further hinted that unlike mere-blinded accusations by some people that the state Governors are using the account for selfish activities, it is rather being managed to clear obstacles preventing local government councils to afford salaries for workers and the execution of promised development projects.
“Huge funds from the state government coffers were utilized to support and complete programmes executed by the local government councils, because the statutory allocations from the federation account meant for the local government councils alone cannot save the situation”, Dankande said.
The Chairman of ALGON in the state was accompanied by his Deputy, who is the the Chairman of Maru local government, Alhaji Isa Dangulbi, as well as the Chairman of Gusau local government council, who is also the Treasurer of ALGON in the state, and Alhaji Ibrahim Tanko amongst others.
