The Chairman Council Yoruba Traditional Obas and Chiefs Ambassador Mohammad Arigbagbuwo has described the death of the First Executive President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Alhaji Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari, as a shock to all Nigerians.
The monarch who described the former president as a complete gentleman of the highest order, said the emergence of Alhaji Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari as the President of Nigeria and his contributions to the national development had reawakened the virtues of democracy in Nigeria in particular and the Africa as a whole.
He added that the former president devoted his entire life to serving his people, Nigeria and Africa, would have his name written in gold in the history of this nation, Africa and the world for the wonderful services he rendered in the development of democracy, peace and security, as well as the development of an excellent foreign policy that ushered into a harmonious comity of nations.
Arigbagbuwo stressed that Nigeria will not be in a haste to forget the presidency of Alhaji Shehu Shagari(1979-1983) particularly in Industrialisation, agriculture, infrastructure and other socio-economic programmes that boosted the nation’s economy and enhanced the well-being and livelihood of many Nigerians.
He said Shagari would always be remembered for his foresight, devotion to serving his religion and humanity, as well as African politics, democracy and freedom particularly in zimbabwe and South Africa.
He maintained that Alhaji Shehu Shagari as a statesman who until his painful death at the age of 93, had been a true progressive father of all Nigerians through his advice and prayers for the development of the country.
The monarch while expressing his sympathy to the immediate family, people and government of Sokoto State, North-west region and Nigerians in general, Arewa Consultative Forum and all well-meaning Nigerians, prayed Allah SWA for the repose of the gentle soul of the former President and grant him Jannatul Firdausi.
