Following students riot that enveloped Modibbo Adama University of Technology Yola, MAUTECH weekend, the management has closed down the institution.
The University’s Registrar,Alhaji Ibrahim A.Ribadu dropped the hint in a circular issued Monday stressing that due to the unrest of the students,the management after its emergency meeting over the unfortunate incident in campus decided to shut down the school till further notice.
“This is to inform all students that the University Senate at its emergency meeting held on the 5th Febuary,2018 directed the closure of the university with immediate effect.
“This is as a result of students unrest that occurred last night(Sunday) .Students are advised to vacate University campus latest by 2:00pm”.the circular directed.
Peoples Daily findings revealed that,the crisis started when a Christian student was said to have posted a blasphemous statement against Prophet Muhammad through his whatsApp handle which sparked the violent protest that led to the killing of one student and injuring many.
Eye witness told journalists that the late student was a 200 level male studying in the Urban and Regional Department of the University.
Throwing more light on the development, Dean Student Affairs of the University, Dr.Lawal Haruna said the closure was aimed at putting a stop to the already escalating unrest.
“We are directing the closure of the institution indefinitely with immediate effect pending investigation of students riot on the campus,” Dr. Haruna said.
Dr. Haruna said while answering questions from journalists in the campus that, the closure of the university was as a result of students unrest that occurred Sunday night advising the students to leave the campus latest by 2pm Monday.
The Dean stated that the violence demonstration erupted in the institution when a Christian student names withheld posted a blasphemous text on his Whatapp domain castigating the Holy Prophet Muhammed which sparked demonstrations by Muslim students
He pointed out that two lecture theatres used by Christians students as fellowship place were burnt even as two mosques on the campus were equally razed down.
“A student posted a blasphemous statement on prophet of the Islamic faith Prohet Mohammed (SAW), on his Whatapp group which sparked the demonstration.
“Student was traced through his posting.and it is the major issues that of the posting on that Whatsopp that sparked off the riot ,” the Dean who spoke on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, Proffesor Kyari Mohammed .
“Three students who resides off the campus sustained injuries as a result of fight which ensued between the two groups “
“We had Students Union Government election successful election,. Even if there was misunderstanding at that time, I don’t believe the election has direct bearing with the incidence of yesterday” .The Dean stated.
Unfortunately some students in the night ( Sunday) took the fight outside the campus and three sustained injuries one died at the hospital this morning at the Federal Medical Centre Yola,”he explained.
