Yobe state government has registered a total number of 16,997 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), who were forced to leave their settlements and move to Damaturu, the state capital, as a result of the escalation of the activities of insurgents in the state.
The state governor, Alh. (Dr.) Ibrahim Gaidam, represented by his deputy, Engr. Abubakar Aliyu, disclosed this recently, while receiving the minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Abdu Bulama who, led other delegates on a courtesy visit to the state government house Damaturu to announce the launching of and distribution of food items and other materials procured by the Special Presidential Committee to the Internally Displaced Persons in the state.
He pointed out that the state government has procured assorted food items and other materials worth about N430 million, which are being distributed on continuous basis to the internally displaced persons who were from Buni Yadi, Buni Gari, Goniri, Gujba, Katarko and Bara towns and are squatting in the houses of their relatives in the state capital.
The state government, he added, is also paying compensation for structure and houses destroyed in addition to extending handsome financial package to the families of security operatives in the event of death or injury while on duty.
To support the security operatives in the state in managing and fighting insurgency, he revealed that the state government has provided over 200 Hilux patrol vehicles to the security operatives of the Joint Task Force (JTF) and other security agencies fighting the insurgents in the state.
He said the state government is expending over N300 million monthly on logistics and payment of allowances and other needs of the security operatives which has an accumulation of over N10 billion from the beginning of the insurgency to date.
He therefore appealed to the federal government to continue to come to the aid of the state government to enable it cope with the challenges, while however, registering his appreciation for the gesture extended by the Presidential Initiative for the North-east through the office of the national security adviser.
