World Press Freedom Day: Gombe NUJ wants journalists to be pro-active

The chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Gombe state council, Alhaji Alhassan Yahaya has appealed to journalists to always balance their reports before going to press, in order to ensure that their reportage has direct bearing to the people.

Alhaji Yahaya, who was speaking in an interview with our correspondent at the weekend, in Gombe, also said that the role of a journalists was to enlighten the public with information in order to enable them have access to what happens around them.

He emphasized that the pen profession has mandated every practicing journalists in the country to investigate allegations level against citizens with a view to come out with relevant information, in order to showcase any differences so as to find lasting solution to the problem.

According to him, journalists have being denied access to information, noting that the significance of the media was to inform and educate the public on certain issues, which he said, will only happen when they know what happens around them.

He called on the security agents to put all hands on deck in order to work effectively with journalists in the country so as to develop the nation, adding the security agents should look at themselves as partner-in-progress with the media rather than harassing them while on their assignment.
