Though loyalists to the Chairman, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter of National Association of Nigerian Traders (NANTs), Dr Edozie Ugwu had never recognised her as the association’s national woman leader, while those with the association’s National President, Barr Ken Ukaoha recognised her as the holder of the position, but Mrs Ruth Agbo herself has recently withdrawn her membership from the association.
Agbo when contacted, said her withdrawal was due to her inability to understand what has been going on in the association.
She added that since January, 2019, she has been out of the system.
“For some time now, crisis has been going on in the association, caused by leadership tussles and disagreements between members loyal to the national president and those loyal to the Abuja chapter of the association,” She said.
Among those loyal to Ugwu who spoke to journalists were the Chairman, Kaura Model market, Abuja, Mr Pacal Arawusi who doubles as the Director, Sensitisation and Mobilisation, FCT NANTs, Spokesman of the Association in FCT, Austine Njeako, Godswill Ojukwu. Among Ukaoha’s loyalists who spoke to this medium were the Secretary, Kuje model market, Mr Aniekwe Francis, his Woman leader, Odoh Vivian and Mrs Agbo before her membership withdrawal.
The causes of the crisis, according to Ugwu’s loyalists were, among others, Ukaoha’s unwillingness to organise a national convention for the organisation to have elected executives. They said the reason why he was made the Acting National President was for him to organise a national convention for the association, but unfortunately, they went on, he didn’t want to do that so as to continue to be there.
Others, according to them were appointing national and FCT women leaders of the Association devoid of election without the consent of the Association, in the names of Mrs Ruth Agbo and Mrs Zainab Omaike respectively; attitude of not carrying members along; non recognising of Dr (Mrs) Rachael Adewumi as the FCT woman leader, a member they said was duly elected to the position before the appropriate authorities.
All these Ugwu confirmed and attributed to Agbo’s withdrawal to quarrel between her and Ukaoha.
However, Ukaoha’s loyalists maintained that: Ukaoha is still the association’s president; Agbo and Omaike, national and FCT women leaders respectively, elected before appropriate authorities.
