Rivers State Governor,Nyeson Wike has called on the Federal Government to admit its failure for not being able to provide security for lives and property of Nigeria.
He also berated the Police Force spokesman over his statement on Governor Samuel Ortom.
Wike was in Benue to commensurate with government and people of the state over the death of 73 persons killed by herdsmen.
Governor Wike who led leaders and elders of his state declared that his visit to the state was not political but to share in the pains of the people of the state.
He faulted the statement credited to the Police Force PRO calling Governor Ortom a drowning man’ describing it as ‘insult on person elected by people.’
According to him, ‘I have instructed the governor forum to react to that statement made by the Force spokesperson, Its an insult that persons elected by their people would be referred to as drowning’.
“Its only in this our democracy that you can hear that kind of statement”.
He said he had instructed the governor forum led by the governor of Zamfara state to summon an emergency meeting for the issue to be discussed.
“The problem I have is that when we see issues that affect the nation we are playing party politics , we should go beyond party politics.
It doesn’t matter whether the governor is a PDP governor or APC governor
“It denigrades the offices. it is no longer about the person, but its about the office.
“So, if you say today its about the Benue state governor and nothing is done, no action is taken tomorrow it may be Zamfara state governor.
Speaking on the killings, Wike advised people of the state to start defending themselves and sleep with one eye closed.
He stated that he had envisaged all the problems facing the country presently which he said made him to be shouting out about the impunity of the present administration.
“I was shouting this but nobody believed it, now it is in Benue, my brother, I identify with your people they are your soldiers, your Police, defend yourself “What am saying is that when a robber comes to your house and knocks your door and you say God help me, you must help yourself first.
“They have inflicted serious injury in Benue, many have been turned to orphans, others to widows. Let the leaders admit their failure.
“ Tell Mr President what is going on in this county is not acceptable.
You know everybody would want to be the favourite child to Mr President but for me I always speak the truth my salvation will come from God and not man”.
He announced a donation of 200 million Naira to alleviate the suffering of the Internally Displaced Persons in the state.
In his response, Governor Ortom thanked the people of Rivers for the show of friendship displayed.
He reinstated his call for the resignation of the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris for failing in his responsibilities to arrest those already identified as behind Benue attacks.
While appreciating President Muhammad Buhari for reiterating call in Nasarawa on Tuesday to security agents to arrest killers, Governor Ortom however, expressed concern whether the IGP would be capable to heed the call, stating that the earlier calls have not been carried out.
