By Lateef Ibrahim, Abuja

Former Minister of Special Duties and presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Tanimu Kabiru Turaki, SAN, on Monday gave insight as to why he is aspiring for the nation’s presidency, stressing that his priority will be to protect the oneness of the country and the survival of the nation’s democracy.
Alhaji Turaki said this during an interactive session with media executives in Abuja.
The former Minister of Special Duties under the immediate past administration of President Goodluck Jonathan pointedly made it clear that the indivisibility of Nigeria and survival of Nigeria’s democracy would be of utmost priority and concern to him if elected President, advising that same should be of interest to every other person aspiring to lead the country.
Turaki, who is the Chairman of the forum of former Ministers on the platform of the PDP, expressed the optimism that he will clinch the presidential ticket of the opposition PDP.
No fewer than six other persons have so far indicated interest in contesting for the presidential ticket of the party apart from Alhaji Turaki.
They include former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, erstwhile National Chairman of the Party, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, former Jigawa State governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, former Minister of Education, Alhaji Ibrahim Shekarau and former Senator, Dr Datti Baba Ahmed among others.
However, Alhaji Turaki pointed out that some of the factors that will work for him to emerge as the presidential flag bearer of the PDP are; that he is a bridge builder, a well educated person who doesn’t have any quarrel or issue with anybody as well having no extra baggage whatsoever.
According to him, “my chances are very bright to pick the PDP presidential ticket. I am a bridge builder, well educated and I am not fighting anybody. I also do not have any extra luggage. In all the positions that I had served, I excelled.
“I consider myself as one among equal for the purpose of making my modest contributions to the development of the country. I feel that I have, over the years, showed capacity in the assignments that I had been given”, he said.
The former Minister, who has already named a one-time Governor of Adamawa State, Mr Boni Haruna as the Director-General of his Campaign Organisation, expressed the optimism that the presidential primaries of the PDP will be free, fair, credible and transparent presidential primaries.
The aspirant however assured that if he is not able to clinch the PDP ticket, he will still support whoever gets the ticket, stressing that the victory of the party in the 2019 general elections should be of primary interest to all
Turaki berated the APC-led federal government for its lack of respect for courts rulings, the rule of law and for being selective its anti-corruption fight.
He attributed most of the killings taking place in the country to lack of justice, saying, “for as long as there is no justice according to the law, there will always be problems”.
The PDP presidential aspirant similarly accused most officials the ruling APC of telling too much lies to Nigerians as well as not having the fear of God.
According to him, “If i become my party’s flag bearer and i win the general election, I will run a government that is godly. The present government lies on virtually all issues. This government is ungodly. They don’t respect rule of law”.
