On the 22nd of January, 2020, being Tuesday, the authorities of the National Association of Nigeria Traditional Medicine Practitioners (NANTMP) inaugurated presidential committee on herbal distributors at the Kaita Plaza in Gwagwalada Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory.

The inauguration was attended by the traditional medicine practitioners as well as herbal distributors across the states and the Federal Capital Territory.
It was indeed a special inauguration as the National Chairman of herbal dispensers, Dr Mukhtar Lamiru Jibrin was elected during the presidential committee on herbal distributors at the event.
Speaking at the inauguration, the president of NANTMP, Dr Shaba Maikudi, said the presidential committee on herbal dispensers was inaugurated to work as a taskforce in order to create awareness for the public.
Equally, he pointed out that the presidential committee was formed as to enable herbal practitioners to meet up with World Health Organization (WHO) standard.
His words: “Since WHO said 85-95% of the world population depends on the traditional medicine, there is need for us to come together under one umbrella to achieve our aims and objectives as the traditional medicine healers”.
He said the presidential committee was formed as a taskforce to enable the herbal practitioners to checkmate the activities of fake herbal hawkers as well regulate the traditional medicine practitioners across the country.
Chairman, herbal dispensers Maikudi pleaded with the herbal hawkers to work hand in hand with the traditional medicine practitioners to achieve the desired goals, as he vowed to join hands with other Executives of NANTMP to fight quacks in the profession of traditional medicines.
The NANTMP President, however, advised the herbal distributors to work hard to redeem the image of the traditional medicine practitioners, and called on them to work in the interest of the association. But so far, the president had done a lot to unite the aggrieved members of NANTMP in various states of the federation.
Dr Bashir Shehu Adamu, the chairman Board of Trustees of NANTMP, expressed with happiness as the presidential committee on herbal dispenser was inaugurated in order to bring sanity to the profession of the traditional medicines in the country
Equally, Shehu Adamu expressed with confident that the inauguration of the presidential committee would pave the way for the herbal practitioners to speak with one voice.
Speaking in the same vein, the vice-chairman, Board of Trustees of NANTMP, Dr Yakubu Ibrahim, also said the inauguration of the presidential committee on herbal hawkers would bring mutual understanding between the executive members of NANTMP and the herbal distributors.
The said the inauguration of taskforce would fast track development and progress within NANTMP, as he noted that the taskforce committee would not work for their interest, but in the interest of NANTMP.
He pointed out that the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology had concluded arrangement to give funds to the authorities of NANTMP to establish botanical gardens in the six Geo-political Zones, but due to lack of co-operation among the traditional medicine practitioners, the funds had not been released.
“Now, that we have the headquarters of NANTMP located in Gwagwalada, Abuja, FCT and that the traditional medicine practitioners, herbal hawkers and herbal marketers are speaking with one voice, we hope and pray that the Federal Ministry Science and Technology would release the funds for us,” Ibrahim explained.
He then appealed to the herbal hawkers as well as the traditional medicine practitioners to shun any negative act capable of tarnishing the image of the act herbal practitioners, and warned them to stop using the traditional medicines to dupe people of their belongings in the society.
Further, the NANTMP BOT vice-chairman, maintained that the management of NANTMP would continue to co-operate with the government of the day to arrest some pending challenges faced by the traditional medicine healers in the country.
The publicity secretary of NANTMP, Dr Abdullahi Zumbur, called on the authorities of NANTMP to give the necessary support to the herbal practitioners herbal marketers in order to play their roles well in the society.
At this juncture, he said the management of NANTMP would work with genuine traditional medicine practitioners who have the certificate from the association.
He urged the herbal hawkers as well as the herbal practitioners to do the needful to move the association to a greater high, while soliciting the co-operation of the herbal distributors to obey the laid down rules and regulations guiding them.
He called on the government of the day to take the traditional medicine practitioners along in the scheme of things, as he equally needed the assistance of the government financially to modernize the traditional medicines in Nigeria.
He noted that NANTMP is now an organized association under the able leadership of Dr Shaba Maikudi, charging the herbal marketers to move towards giving the necessary support to the present management of NANTMP.
The NANTMP publicity secretary authoritatively advised the Nigerian traditional medicine practitioners to always give good traditional medicines to their clients. Zumbur appealed to the herbal practitioners to specialize on one traditional medicine they have the knowledge about, instead of giving harmful herbs to the people.
Not left out, the newly elected chairman of herbal hawkers, Dr Mukhtar Jibrin Lamiru, said he would carry his members along, as well work under the body of NANTMP.
