Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State has disclosed that his administration inherited a salary of over N50 billion, thereby impeding his desire to speedily transform the state.
The governor who disclosed this during a broadcast to the people of the state, to commemorate the country’s 60th anniversary, explained that the bulk of the said amount was borrowed, coupled with other debt obligations, which has greatly slowed down the pace of infrastructural development in the state.
He noted that despite these obvious challenges, they would continue to give priority attentive to human capital development and economic diversification, with emphasis on agriculture so as to pull the state out of economic doldrums; disclosing however, that those whose actions have hurt the state and it’s people, should be prepared to face the consequences.
He further posited that none payment, late payment and percentage payment of salaries have become a thing of the past, promising that against all odds, they would continue to strive to promptly pay salaries of genuine civil servants in the state.
Governor Bello equally disclosed that government would soon take action against those who compromised the system and fraudulently intercepted wages to which they were not entitled to, assuring that the full weight of the law would be brought upon the culprits, to serve as deterrent to others.
The governor therefore stressed the need for the youths to be fully engaged in agriculture, noting that the stigma of rustic rurality associated with agriculture has since evaporated, insisting that agric billionaires are phenomenon that would soon take over the country.
He also disclosed that nine local governments in the state have submerged in water, arising from flooding, assuring that government is committed to providing succour to those affected, even as he enjoined others who are yet to relocate to hinterlands to do so, so as not to endanger their lives and those of their loved ones.
He further thanked the people of the state for their support to his administration as well as the ruling All Progressives Congress, saying with such wonderful support, they were irrevocably committed to deliver more gains of democracy stressing that no opposition can derail them from realizing such noble objectives.
