In this vox pop, the Muslim Ummah in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), who spoke with Usman Shuaibu, during the Eid-el-fitr celebrationscalled on followers of the country’s two dominant religions to tolerate each other for peace and progress of the FCT and the nation at large. Excerpts:
Hajiya Ladi Suleiman (a civil servant): We the civil servants celebrated Sallah without salaries being paid by the federal government. We want the government to pay salaries before any festivity in the country.
Alhaji Abdullahi Dabo (a retired soldier):Those inthe corridors of powershould to use their positions to make sure salaries of the workers are paid in order to put smiles on their faces during Sallah or any other festivity. Muslims should provide for the less privileged ones in the society so that they can enjoy Sallah. Nigerian government should place emphasis on the welfare of citizens when the need arises. Nigerian leaders should expedite action to arrest the lingering security challenges faced by citizensin the capital city and the country at large. Government should always provide purposeful leadership to put an end to the security problem militating against the various societies across the country.
Mallam Abubakar Madaki (a traditional titleholder); I am begging Nigerians who have hands on the issue of insurgency to leave the devilish act for the sake of God; because Insurgents have done a lot of damages to Nigeria. During Sallah, Muslims should celebrate with the fear of God. Muslims should be their brothers, keepers at all times. Both Muslims and Christians should love each other for the overall development of the FCT and country. He therefore pleaded with followers of the country’s dominant religions to tolerate each other in the interest of peace to reign in the country.
Ademola Taiwo (a student): I don’t know why our parents working for the government are made to always celebrate festivities without receiving their monthly salaries from the government. I therefore urge the federal government to change the trend, and start paying salaries of civil servants to enable them to cope with demands during festivities.
Mallam Idrisu Adamu (a unionist); Not all Muslims, especially the civil servants were happy during this year’s Sallah celebration due to the economic hardship in the land. And both Muslims and Christians celebrate festivities without receiving their monthly salaries. He advised the youths to celebrate Sallah in accordance with the teaching of Islam. Youths should not use the advantage of Eid-el-fitr to engage in anti-social vices.
Chief Jibrin Sarkin (a village head); Muslims and Christians should embrace each other in love. Muslims all over the country should not use the advantage of Sallah to cause crisis in the country, describing Islam as a religion of peace. Nigerian leaders should place high premium on the needs of the people during the festiveperiod.
Chairmen of the area councils in FCT should carry the traditional rulers along in terms of their needs during the Sallah celebration.
