The appointment of Vice-Chancellor elect, Professor Osasere Faraday Orumwense, of University of Benin (UNIBEN), Edo state, marks the first time the institution has enjoyed relative peace and smooth transition devoid of rancor since the last 44-years it was established.
Outgoing Vice-Chancellor of UNIBEN, Professor Godwin Osayuki Oshodin dropped the hint on Tuesday at a press conference on the programme line up to mark the school’s 39th/40th convocation and 44th founder’s day ceremony.
“I thank God for the wisdom he gave to the University governing council to be able to appoint my successor while I am still in the saddle as Vice-Chancellor. This noble feat is giving us, we members of the University community, the opportunity to witness a smooth transition devoid of rancor’’, he said.
462 students have been outlined for undergraduate Diplomas, 10, 735 graduands are to be awarded various Diplomas and degrees of the University.
103 students are to bag doctorate degree (Ph.D), while 1933 are for Masters along with 8,237 students will be awarded undergraduate Degrees according to a breakdown of the figures for the 2011/2012 academic session.
Professor Oshodin attributed the delay in holding the convocation last year to the nationwide strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) as part of the reasons for the delay.
He said the ceremony will begin on Wednesday November 19, with an inter-denominational service schedule to hold at the Akin Deko Main Auditorium, Ugbowo Campus, at 9 a.m.
The VC appealed for improved funding of universities, especially in areas of research and international seminar, in line with global standard.
Senator Daisy Ehanire Danjuma, Tony Elumelu and Chief Sam Igbe, the Iyse of Benin Kingdom are among those to be conferred honorary Doctorate degrees by the ivory tower, according to him.
The tenure in office as Vice-Chancellor, which will come to an end on November 30, 2014, saw the appointment of about 4,000 academic and non-academic staff.
