UNIBEN suspends field work over insecurity

Due to the rising spate of insecurity, the Management of University of Benin, (UNIBEN) has suspended all field trips and excursions outside Benin City, Edo State capital forthwith.
Spokesperson of the University, Dr. Benedicta Ehanire in a statement said, “In view of the current security situation in the Country (Nigeria) and the recent experience of some students of the University”, informed Management decision to suspend “all field trips/excursions outside Benin City are suspended forthwith”.
Ehanire, advised that “if such field work becomes inevitable, appropriate security arrangements should be made including engagement of security escorts”.
The development followed the recent kidnapping of 13 students and four lecturers by armed herdsmen.
The victims are from the Department of Geology in the institution at Ikposhi, Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of the State, were released last week Tuesday night by Vigilante and police operatives.
One of the victims of kidnap, who identified himself as Osunde, commended the bravery and the prompt intervention of the Vigilante and police which led to their rescue.
