The Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital (UDTH, Sokoto is set to perform first-ever kidney transplant operation, the outgoing vice-chancellor, Professor Riskuwa Arabu Shehu had said.
Prof. Shehu disclosed this on Tuesday, in Sokoto, at the induction and oath-taking ceremony of for fresh graduands of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences into the professional body, held at the faculty’s auditorium.
He said the inaugural operation would be possible in less than two months, adding that medical personnel from the hospital have already acquired technical know-how to mount specialised equipment already on ground.
“It is a good news to tell this gathering that our medical team would soon commence the first kidney surgical operation at our Teaching Hospital. It is a ground breakthrough on our part. Our medical personnel are received overseas training on that”, he explained.
He said the commencement of the surgery in the teaching hospital would no doubt reduce the high demand of medical treatment in foreign countries.
The VC charged the graduands to be more profession while discharging their responsibilities, saying “I enjoin you to be good team players with other healthcare professionals in the best interest and benefit of your patients and society at large.”
In her remark, the Acting Registrar of the Council, Mrs. Gloria Abumere, respresented by Pastor (Mrs.) Adenike Ajayi, congratulated the new members and charged them on moral behaviour.
Her words: “You are expected to do your jobs with sincerity and with all your heart and use your knowledge and skills for the advancement of the country.”
