A 63-year-old trader, Willy Udemba, who allegedly assaulted a policeman on lawful duty, yesterday appeared before an Ejigbo Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

Udemba, who lives on Ogundele Road, Oja-Oba, is being tried on a two-count charge of assaulting a police officer and causing the officer bodily harm.

The prosecutor, Cpl. Lucky Ilevare, representing Sgt. Paul Inedu, told the court that the offences were committed on April 18 at about 6:00 a.m. at Idimu, Lagos.

He said that Udem assaulted one Cpl. Josiah Ameh and also pushed him into the gutter.

The prosecutor added that the accused broke the leg of the officer, as a result of the pushing. He said that the offences contravened Sections 172 and 244 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2011.

However, Udemba pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against him.

The Magistrate, Mrs. M.B. Folami, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

Folami adjourned the case till June 4, for further hearing. (NAN)
