With the recent constitution of the Transition Committee by Governor Umaru Tanko Al-makura, all is now set for the process leading to handing over of the mantle of power to the incoming administration of Governor-elect, Engineer Abdullahi Sule.
The promptness and sincerity of purpose demonstrated by Governor Al-makura in putting together the high calibre of personalities making up the transition committee, is yet another landmark achievement.
Recall that in 2011, the transition process was marked by intrigues, subterfuge and backstabbing, with the then outgoing Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) administration showing stiff reluctance by doing everything in its power to frustrate a smooth transition.
However, the transition committee promptly put in place by Governor Al-makura consisting of seasoned technocrats and politicians, who are well suited to midwife a handing over, is a marked departure from what obtains in the immediate past.
In line with the cardinal tenets of his administration, of openness, fairness and transparency, Governor Al-makura while outlining the terms of reference for the committee, which entails reviewing his administration since its inception in 2011, demonstrated yet again an unprecedented level of accountability and candidness.
Not many a sitting governor in the country would readily agree for the incoming administration to dutifully review its past activities but having conducted his affairs in a manner that profess his strict compliance to accountability and transparency, Governor Al-makura is opening the books for all to see.
Not only that and in utmost modesty, the outgoing Governor is equally challenging the transition committee to identify challenges in the implementation of policies, projects and programmes, with a view to suggesting likely steps for the incoming administration to explore.
Al-makura also tasked the committee to examine Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs, as well as government-owned companies, including available manpower with a view to making appropriate recommendations.
This openness and dogged commitment to the universal tenets of good governance characterised by participation, consensus oriented, accountability, transparency, equity and inclusiveness, among others, which have been the hallmark of the outgoing administration, have put paid to spurious claims leading to the governorship primary election of the All Progressives Congress (APC) alleging that Governor Al-makura has skeletons in his cupboard and was angling for a lacky to cover his tracks after leaving office.
The constitution of the transition committee together with its terms of reference, as explicitly stated during the inauguration of the committee, leaves no room for speculation and outright falsehood against an administration that stood tall while doing Nasarawa State proud.
That’s the more reason why members of the transition committee must take their responsibility with all seriousness as a lot will depend on their earnest commitment to take Nasarawa State to the Next Level.
Having bared his administration open for all to see, it behoves on the transition committee to assimilate all the effective and efficient leadership skills marking out the Al-makura administration, with a view to making such readily available for the incoming administration.
Since governance is a continuum, it is expected that the transition committee will also highlight possible pitfalls for the incoming administration to avoid in the quest for delivering dividends of democracy to the people of the state.
Based on its terms of reference, the committee is expected to be a repository of clear-cut ideas on how the incoming administration under the leadership of Governor-elect, Engineer Abdullahi Sule will continue where the outgoing administration ends, for the sustenance and even surpassing the laudable development strides so far recorded.
By throwing the books of his administration open for scrutiny, Governor Al-makura has thus justified the trust reposed in him by his teeming supporters and admirers, who from inception recognised his sterling leadership qualities.
With such high level of transparency, it remains for the transition committee to ensure a smooth, seamless handing over of power, devoid of rancour or ill feelings associated with previous similar exercises.
This is more so because in Nasarawa State, nothing less than a smooth transition is expected, considering the abiding unity and sense of belonging within the ruling APC, as well as the exemplary leadership qualities of both the outgoing and incoming governor.
