From Matthew Aramunde, Lagos
The National Chairman of the Unity Party Of Nigeria UPN, Dr Fredrick Fasehun has revealed that there exist in his party some recalcitrant elements whose activities smirks of indiscipline and sheer arrogance.
He made the assertion when he addressed pressmen at his Okota residence in Lagos yesterday
The visibly angry founder of the Odua Peoples Congress (OPC) said he is piqued that certain members of the party have decided to throw decorum to the winds by deliberately flouting the provisions of the constitution of the party and there by fanning the embers of disunity amongst party members.
He specifically made reference to the attitude of the National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Adedeji whom he alleged flouted an earlier directives from the top hierarchy of the party to shift the NEC meeting that was slated for the 18th and 19th of September to a later date.
He noted that rather and to the chagrin of the leaders of the party, Adedeji in connivance with those who he misinformed went ahead to hold NEC meeting without the consent of the National Chairman and his management team.
Noting that it is only at the behest of the National Chairman of the party that any NEC meeting could hold who is also empowered to so direct the National Secretary to inform members of the place, time and venue of such meetings as enunciated in Section 4(2) of the party’s constitution, he then declared the purported NEC meeting that was convened at the instant of the National Publicity Secretary as not only malicious, divisive and unconstitutional and so remains null and void and of no effect.
On the issue of the emergence of an acting National Chairman in the person of Dr Manzo Abubakar, that is making the rounds, Fasehun debunked the rumour stressing that Abubakar remains his deputy and should not be addressed as an acting Chairman
On the controversies generated in some quarters that a consensus governorship candidate has been picked in Ogun State, the chairman noted that the party will at all times adhere to the rules and regulations guiding elections in the country as outlined by INEC stressing that primaries to pick governorship candidates are usually the prerogatives of party members or delegates in their respective states and that the party will never deviate from the path.
He therefore asked the general public to disregard such publications as the party has not picked any governorship candidates in any of the states.
On his stance on the on-going endorsement of President Goodluck Jonathan that is sweeping across the nation, Fasehun said the UPN has not come together to take a decision on the President or any other aspirant but expressed his belief that every aspirant to any position in the land at whatever level of the polity should be contested on a level playing ground noting that that is the spirit of democracy.
“Democracy is what UPN stands for, we will not subscribe to the sale of the UPN to anyone who does not want to comply with the constitutional recommendations of the land” he submit
