The Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) has announced the commencement of 2014 edition of its Annual National Essay Competition, which kicked off Monday, September 29, 2014 with the call for entries to secondary schools across the country.
The topic for this year is “Understanding the activities of the Nigerian Capital Market is important for today’s youth. Discuss”
This year’s edition is only open to Senior Secondary School students. The Deadline for the 2014 Edition is the second week in November. All Entries should be sent via e-mail to email@example.com or submitted online on www.nse.com.ng and also on www.facebook.com/TheNigerianStockExchange.
The Head of Corporate Division of The NSE, Mr. Bola Adeeko stated that “The Exchange is committed to supporting efforts aimed at addressing financial literacy and empowerment; this commitment is expressed in the various financial inclusion and literacy initiatives undertaken by The NSE, one of which is the Annual Essay Competition. The competition’s overall goal is to develop a culture of wealth creation amongst our youth – by “Catching Them Young’’.
He also noted that the competition’s key objective is to expose the younger generation to the operations of the stock market; allow them develop a culture of medium and long-term investment habit; encourage the students to consider career choices in the securities market and related professions and fill the gaps between school curriculum and practical approach to investing in the stock market; and to encourage critical thinking amongst students to help reinforce financial and capital market concepts.
Mr. Adeeko also mentioned that the 2013 edition was quite historic as the competition was won by Master Mahmud Abdullahi, a student with physical disability from Government College, Azare in Bauchi State. “We believe that the impact of this initiative is commendable as we have recorded an increase in the number of participants and overall, high level of interest which has altogether created greater awareness of the dynamics of the stock exchange. Today we are particularly thrilled at being able to support and foster sound financial literacy amongst our youth” he stated.
He further stated that “In line with the philosophy of the competition, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Prize winners will be given Equity Investments in quoted companies, scholarships for University Education and state- of-the-art Tablets. Their schools will get varying quantities of PCs and Digital Printers. Furthermore, seven National winners will be rewarded with consolation prizes of mini Laptops”.

The 13th Annual National Essay Competition of The NSE will come to a climax with a Grand Finale and Awards ceremony on December 5 2014 with the occasion being expected to be graced by prominent Nigerians in the finance and education sectors.
