From Mustapha Adamu, Kano
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has confirmed that telephone mast is not hazardous to health.
Since the coming of mobile telecommunication into Nigeria, people had developed the notion that the mast was harmful to human health, situation that caused great fear among communities when communication companies provide it, as some residents even rejected it.
However, the commission, according to its Zonal Controller, Kano Zonal Office, Adamu Amshi said there has never been a study that revealed that telephone mast causes health challenges to human being.
“Telephone mast is an infrastructural development. It is not hazardous to health. No study has ever conducted which revealed that mast is harmful to health,” Mr Amshi said, while receiving a delegation from the Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) at his office, yesterday.
He continued “It baffles me to see even the learners people, including professors have held this notion with grief. There is nothing to fear.
“People should know that without mast, telecommunication will not be possible. If you go to developed countries, you will see it everywhere. Even in Saudi Arabia, if you go to Holy site of the mosques of Haram in Makkah, you will see a lot of masts there.
“This mast is not provided haphazardly. The weight, size, depth of the ground, location and even the nuts to use for fixing it must be measured, “ he emphasized
The outgoing Controller also called on the CITAD, media and other stakeholders to create awareness to the public against the belief that mast is hazardous to health.
