Tanker lorry kills final year student in Benue

From Uche Nnorom, Makurdi

A final year student of Information Technology of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Makurdi Study Center, Moses Nnadever, was yesterday killed by a tanker lorry on his way to lectures.

Eye witnesses told Peoples Daily that the deceased was on a motorcycle when suddenly, the tanker driver experienced break failure and rammed into them, killing Moses on the spot while the motorcycle rider sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital.

As soon as the incident happened, students of the institution wasted no time in rushing to the scene, and barricaded the Makurdi-Enugu expressway, threatening to burn down the tanker in protest against the killing of Moses, whom many described as a nice person.

It took the quick intervention of the police, who arrived the scene and started shooting tear gas canisters while also clearing the barricade to stop the students from carrying out their action.

Infuriated at the action of the police, the students started throwing stones at the policemen, insisting that the driver of the tanker, who took refuge at the Nigerian Prisons office close to the school, be brought out and handed over to them.

The incident caused serious traffic gridlock in the area even as it almost disrupted on-going examination in the school, though staffers of the institution battled hard to keep the rampaging students in check.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ezeala, a Superintendent of Police, confirmed the incident but noted that normalcy had been restored while the remains of the deceased had been deposited at a mortuary.
