Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD) Branch of NUPENG has warned of an impending strike action in parts of the South — South and South — East of the country should government failed to heed to Union’s call for
urgent repairs of Port Harcourt – Eleme junction Road, Okigwe—Umuahia, and Jebba—Oloru—Ilorin Roads in Rivers, Abia and Kwara States respectively.
National Chairman of PTD, Comrade Salimon Oladiti gave the warning after a brief meeting with other Executive members in Abuja, saying, the said Roads had claim the lives of some members of the PTD and portends great dangers to more member’s lives and properties as its daily become more un-motorable.
The National Chairman, said, the deplorable state of the Port Harcourt — Eleme Junction Road a distance of just about 10 Kilometers takes seven to eight hours of maneuvers and meandering by trucks, many of which breaks down in the process, upturning contents, killing PTD members and endangering the lives of several other Nigerians using the Road.
The National Chairman equally cited the dilapidated state of Okigwe — Umuahia Road as well as Jebba — Oloru Road describing its present states as appalling while further delay in its repairs portends
greater danger. He expressed concerned by members and worried that nothing has been done on all these Roads inspite of repeated call for government intervention and all measures employed to call on
government to ameliorate the situation was to no avail. He noted that these Roads — Port Harcourt — Eleme, Okigwe — Umuahia and Jebba — Oloru are the worst spots that gives Tanker Drivers most concern as lives and property are lost every day.
The Comrade Oladiti therefore informed of the resolve of the executive committee meeting in Abuja to take action by ensuring that lifting or distribution of fuel products on these axis is discontinued in the
next two weeks where nothing is done to repair the Roads and save PTD members from the continued carnage experienced on a daily basis.
The National Chairman, commended the Federal Government on the Transformation Agenda and the successes recorded in other sectors, roads inclusive, especially Lagos – Benin – Ore Road. He however
enjoined government to save Nigerians using these other bad Roads from the harrowing experiences encountered when plying the Road adding that where the situation is left unabated, the nation and economy is the worst for it on the long run.
