Benue First Lady Arc. Yemisi Dooshima Suswam has urged women to be actively involved in the ongoing process leading to the general election in 2015, warning them against allowing their children to be used as tools for violence by politicians.
Mrs. Suswam who said this yesterday during a grand reception organized by the National Council of Women Society (NCWS) and the State Ministry of Women Affairs in appreciation of her strides in emancipation of the womenfolk, encouraged the women to strive for excellence in their endeavors.
She also advised them to seek elective positions so as to contribute to the development of the state.
“There is need for women to unite and work with one voice; we must stand up for each other. Benue women have achieved unprecedented heights in elective positions. For the first time we have 5 women in the state executive council, three (3) in the state assembly, the Vice Chancellor of the state university is a woman as well as the Managing Director, Lower Benue River Basin. You women deserve to be celebrated”, she said.
The Benue First Lady described the honor done her as symbolic, positing that all she has done since inception of the administration is to improve on the wellbeing of the Benue woman who had never been given a voice, through empowerment schemes. She therefore charged them to continue to remain change agents for restoration of moral values in the society.
Wife of President Goodluck Jonathan, Dame Patience Jonathan who was represented by the wife of the Senate President Helen Onma Mark, lauded Mrs. Suswam for providing the enabling environment for women to actualize their dream, noting too, that her several emancipation and empowerment programs that has liberated womenfolk in the State.
Minister of Interior, Comrade Abba Moro praised Mrs. Suswam for her passion in giving women in the State a pride of place.
He added that the government has accorded attention as well as improve on the wellbeing of women in the State.
“Mrs Suswam has done well for the Benue pple. The office of the First Lady was close as well as felt the pulse of the people by always coming to their aid.. I Urge whoever will take over from her, to consolidate on the gains of this administration. Benue people should be compassionate and considerate on who takes over from Suswam’s administration”, Moro said.
Director-General, National Orientation Agency, Mike Omeri said Ms. Suswam has proved her worth amongst women in Nigeria, maintaining that Women have a prominent role to play through social engineering, intellect and talent to drive the process of the transformation agenda of Jonathan government.
He charged Benue women to be involved in the process of driving our political engine especially as we march towards elections.
The representative of Northern Governor’s forum and wife of the Governor of Kogi State, Hajiya Halima Ladi Wada said she will borrow a leaf from the leadership style of Yemisi to succeed and urged her as chairperson of Northern Governor’s Wives’ Forum to continue to keep the issues of women in the front burner.
