Suspected IED explosion kills 1, injures 2 in Edo

An explosion that wrecked havoc at the neighbourhood of Iddo Community in Okpella, Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo state, left one person dead and two others wounded.
It was learnt that the loud noise of suspected unlicensed Improvised Explosive Device (IED), occurred at a three apartment building, forcing residence in the area to flee for safety on Monday evening.
The identity of the victims could not be immediately ascertained as at the time of filling in this report, while blood stains and making material believed to have been used by suspects to produce the suspected IED’s, littered the apartment.
Besides, the apartment where the suspected IED’s were being produced, had been a shelter for some persons from Kogi state without the knowledge of other residents in the area, according to a resident of Iddo Community.
The resident who craved for anonymity, said he raised the alarm when he discovered the lifeless body of the victim of the explosion, which drew the attention of other youths who apprehended other occupants of the building where the explosion occurred.
The resident explained further that one of the occupants believed to have drove the vehicle laddened with prepared explosives, arms and ammunitions, abandoned the vehicle in a bush path and escaped.
President, Iddo Youth, Mohammad Mohammad, who spoke on the incident, said some braved youths gave the fleeing producers of IED’s a hot chase, which made the driver to abandon their vehicle.
“We all came out when we heard the sound and inform the people that thing that exploded killed somebody and on getting to the place one of the occupant we met immediately escaped in a vehicle.
“So the youth gave him a hot chase shouting that he had killed somebody and he was subsequently arrested and taken to the Divisional Police Officer before his onward transfer to the area Commander.
Contacted, the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Babatunde Johnson Kokumo, said the Command will brief the media on the issue today.
