At least three (3) persons including a lawyer Moses Udam, his wife Nkechi and an old blind man Mazugu Nyikor were yesterday allegedly murdered by suspected armed bandits in Agboughol Makurdi local government area of Benue State.
Peoplesdaily gathered from residents of the area that the terrorists invaded the area at about 11 pm shooting sporadically and also, injuring three (3) others.
According to Terwase Ungase, “we heard heavy gunshot and went out to know where the gunshots came from. Then, we heard shout by one of the resident that herders were attacking the area.
Another resident, Amaa Ate said they entered his house and he escaped through the ceiling, intimating that they took away 200,000 naira and a handset.
Hear him, “they were four of them. One of them spoke in English Language. They threatened to kill my daughter if he failed to tell them the whereabout of her father. My daughter told them that her father went out and they spanked her and left.
Lamenting over the incident which he noted is happening barely four days after 4 persons were also, killed by suspected herders in Adaka,Makurdi local government area Governor Samuel Ortom says Benue State under his watch will not succumb to attacks by terrorists whether they are jihadists or militia herders whose sole target is occupation of the state and destruction of lives and property.
The Governor made this position known while addressing journalists at the scene of the incident.
He stated that the pattern of the attack and killings barely four days after a similar incident at Tse-Angbande was unfortunate and bore the handwriting of mindless jihadists who had set out to overrun the state.
The Governor noted that the series of attacks were a grand plan to whittle down operations of Livestock Guards and Agro Rangers who are doing very well in containing attacks on communities and enforcing the ranching law of the state.
The Governor lamented that developed climes globally with higher number of cattle compared to Nigeria have no cases of conflicts between herders and farmers due to ranching which is also being practiced in Benue, stressing that he would continue to speak against impunity in the country.
Meanwhile, Operation Whirl Stroke said unknown gunmen suspected to be hired killers assassinated a Makurdi based legal practitioner, identified as Mr. Moses Udam alongside with his wife and one other unidentified blind man living close to his apartment.
The victim was shot dead and butchered together with the wife at their residence located behind modern market in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, around 11pm, Tuesday.
It was gathered that the gunmen killed the victim and his wife, made away with his telephone sets and other valuable items before proceeding to kill the blind man and injured one person.
A source who claimed to have witnessed the incident, but pleaded anonymity, said the hired assassin numbering eight, allegedly trailed the lawyer and broke into the house in reach of vital documents in connection with a disturbing case being handled by the late victim.
The source further that the armed men also forced their way into another residence where they rob the occupant of his N200,000 before they fled.
“It was when they left that we started screaming and shouting for help and also alerted troops of OPWS.
“Troops who got alerted immediately moved to the scene to stabilise the situation while police later arrived the scene.
“From what we gathered before Udam’s demise, was that he was handling some sensitive cases and might have been killed to silence him”, the source said.
When contacted, OPWS Commander Gen Yekini only said his troops are in the area but declined further comments.
“We have stabilized the area and everywhere is now calm. However you can get further details from the Defence Headquarters Media Operations on the incident”, General Yekini stated.
