By Amaechi Agbo
Head of the Technical Committee of the Nigeria Football Federation, Ahmed Yusuf Fresh, has assured that the Super Eagles would qualify from Group D in the Russia 2018 World Cup slated to kick off on June 14 next year.
The football tactician who was recently honorued in South Africa for his contribution to football development in the continent, expressed optimism that the Super Eagles will qualify from the group adding that the NFF’s target for next year’s global showpiece is last four.
“Our group is an open group. I am happy with the draw. It is a fantastic draw for Nigeria because two weeks before the draw, we played Argentina and Nigerians saw the outcome of the result. I am assuring Nigerians that we will definitely qualify from the group. NFF’s target is to reach the last four of the World Cup.
“We will play two friendly games in March next year and we have another window in June where we will play England at Wembley. Of course we are going to engage about 2-3 friendly matches. We are also planning for a home friendly in Abuja to send the players off from the city of power. The support we need from the federal government is for them to approve our budget. I believe the federal government will approve the budget for the Super Eagles,” he stated.
On his award by African Football Newsmaker in South Africa, Mr Fresh said he was happy and that the award would continue to motivate him.
“I am happy for the recognition. I am happy for what I am doing and will continue to do my best for the country. The award is fantastic for me and my family. It will keep me motivated.”
Speaking on the importance of the just concluded FCT Principals Cup, Mr Fresh advised other states FAs to emulate the FCT FA in planning and organizing grassroots sports in order to cater for the future need of the country in football.
“We have almost 37member associations in Nigeria and I am calling on all of them to emulate FCT FA. I think apart from Kano, Niger and Lagos FAs, FCT should be the fourth FA we have doing something good. I call on all other FAs to emulate the FCT FA because catching the players young is cardinal for the future of our football.”
On the CHAN Eagles preparations ahead 2018 tournament, he stated that the team will start camping immediately the players are through with the NPFL Super 6 in Kano.
“The coach of the CHAN Eagles has just submitted his plans to the committee and he wants to start his camping by having Super 6 tournament in Kano. After the Super 6, they will move straight to Morocco where they will camp finally before the tournament. Everything is set and done. What is remaining is the arrival time and date.
He concluded that the call to recall Vincent Enyeama, former Super Eagles goal tender to the team ahead of Russia finals “depends on the technical crew and the coach. It is not my plan. Once they say they need him, we will approve it. If they say they don’t need him, of course, we will not invite him.”
