Stay off illicit drugs, trafficking -HHSS boss implores youth

Youth in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have been urged to avoid drugs abuse and trafficking, as such acts pose serious danger on their potentials, thereby jeopardizing their future.
The caution was made by stakeholders during a recent sensitization campaign for youth, organised by FCT Drug Abuse Control Committee, in Kuje Area Council of the FCT.
According to the Secretary FCT Health and Human Services Secretariat (HHSS), Barr. Amanda Pam, illicit drug use and abuse have become prevalent in the society, because information about the availability and types of drugs, method of ingestion and drug seeking practice are readily available.
The Secretary, who spoke through her Special Assistant (Administration), Mr. Lebi Bankole explained that the sensitization programme was designed to raise awareness among the youth, who are the target population for drug abuse.
Pam listed experimentation, peer pressure, the bid to reduce stress, build self esteem, the desire to be sociable, drugs availability, unemployment, and social economic frustration among others as factors that drive many youths to engage in drugs.
She emphasized that health and social hazards of involvement in drug abuse have enormous consequences on their families and society at large.
Also speaking, the Director Pharmaceutical Services and Chairperson FCT Drug Abuse Campaign Committee Pharm Celina Asuelinmen advised the student to listen attentively to all the lectures and educate their friends and families.
She expressed appreciation to the FCT Administration for approving such an enlightenment and sensitization programme.
According to her, the programme would impart positively in the lives of the youth.
In the same vein, the Gumo of Kuje who was represented by one of his district head advised students to take the lesson learnt to their friends, families and relatives as it will go along way to reducing cases of drugs addition in the society.
