Stakeholders in Peoples Democratic party, PDP, Edo State Chapter have charged the national leadership of the party to conduct Congress to enable it elect officers that will pilot the party into the governorship election in the State.
Mrs Igbinoba Madonna Influence, a Chieftain of the party from Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area at the Weekend, hinted on the devastating consequences if the Congress is delayed till March 2020.
She predicted that it will be counter- productive to the party’s desire towards winning Edo State governorship election billed for 2020.
Igbinoba made this known in a chat with newsmen in Benin City, Edo State Capital ahead of March 2020 when the tenure of the incumbent State executive of PDP led by Chief Dan Orbih would expire.
Igbinoba, sided with the submission of Mr Jeffrey Edorodion, a Chieftain of the party in the same Local Government Area who had earlier called on the party’s National & Zonal leadership to direct a process for an early conduct of the Congress.
But, Mr Michael Obasuyi who is also a Chieftain of PDP in the State, countered their views, stressing that “the tenure of the elected State executive led by Chief Dan Orbih will exit in March 2020”.
According Mrs Igbinoba, “If “the State Congress is conducted in March or April 2020, it would certainly keep the party in perpetual opposition.
“There will not be sufficient room and time to heal whatever grievances that may arise from the Congress, let alone that which may arise from the governorship primaries.
The Ikpoba- Okha PDP Chieftain, however recommended that the party leadership at both the National & Zonal levels to “allow for the the conduct of the State Congress before the end of the year 2019.
The measure would allow for the “party to settle down early for the governorship election ahead”, adding that “anything short of this will amount to the fact that the party’s leadership may be comfortable with its opposition role in Edo State”.
She described PDP poor performance in the 2019 State House of Assembly election which the All Progressives Congress of Nigeria, APC won all the 24 seats as lack as a product of late preparation and lack of cooperation among members of the party.
“We have stayed too long in opposition party in Edo. If the Congress is not conducted in time, we will have a difficult task of winning the 2020 election.
“Party members are already indicating interest to run for various positions”, she stressed.
