From Raji Bello, Sokoto
Residents in Sokoto metropolis have appealed to the Federal Government to as matter of urgency intervene in the reconstruction of a near collapsed bridge within the state capital.
The culvert-bridge which is situated along Sokoto-Illela road, a major road linking the city is on the verge of total collapse, forcing motorists and other road users to take a narrow and diverted road.
A commercial motorist at the Illela garage, Malam Attahiru Aliyu, said the road is now a source of nightmare to motorists, especially night travellers who may not be aware of the problem.
Other motorists interviewed by our correspondent also called on the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) to assist in effecting repairs on the damaged culvert-bridge.
However, a construction firm, CGC Nigeria limited, was sighted by our correspondent, working on the road as a temporary measure to make it passable.
“Our aim is to put on a temporary measure which will make the road passable. We see this as part of our social responsibility,” the company’s foreman, Mr. Sarki Marcus, explained.
When contacted, the FERMA’s Maintenance Engineer and Acting Zonal Coordinator in-charge of Northwest II, Engineer Yusuf Alfa said the agency is aware of the bridge state of damage.
He added that efforts are underway to put the culvert into good condition, “we have forwarded the report to the appropriate authorities and am ensuring you that the culvert-bridge will be fit in due time”, Alfa said.
