From Raji Bello Sokoto
A Councillor in Sokoto State, Hon. Nasiru Abubakar has sponsored the training of no fewer than twenty young women from his constituency in tailoring skill.
Abubakar who is representing Sarkin Zamfara ward “B” area of Sokoto South local government, on the platform of All Progressive Congress (APC) also presented sets of tailoring machines to the beneficiaries during the graduation ceremony held in Sokoto yesterday.
Other constituents that benefited from the empowerment scheme include disabled and vulnerable persons. They were also presented with various gifts ranging from clothing materials and cash at the event.
Speaking at the presentation, Abubakar said the gesture was in fulfilment of his campaign promises pledged during his election.
He added that the feat was achieved through a nongovernmental organization known as Nasiru Abubakar Youth Empowerment Programme (NAYEP) he initiated at assumption of his legislative duty.
Abubakar disclosed that he was able to raise fund for the empowerment programme through some enumerations and monthly salaries accrued to him as a councillor representing the ward.
The Councillor challenged other elective officers at the grassroots to prioritise their people’s welfare, adding that he has no reason not give back to his people that made him whom he is today.
“There is no reason for a politician to think it’s only during campaign or election he or she will remember their people. My salary is not meant for me alone but also for people I represented. I am doing this to challenge whoever may succeed me.” Abubakar explained.
In his remarks, the party chairman in the state, Alhaji Suleiman Danmadamin Isah praised the councillor for his foresight in providing the needed dividends of democracy to his people.
He said the councillor has displayed a rare sense of responsive leadership, and promised to inform the state governor, Alhaji Aminu Waziri Tambuwal about the councillor’s giant stride to his people.
“In the last five years as party chairman, I have not seen any councillor to have organized such empowerment programme in the state. I can assure you that if you continue like this, the future is brighter for you. You can be elected as a state governor one day,” Isah applauded.
In their commendations, one of the beneficiaries, Asmau Shehu expressed her appreciation to the councillor and pray to God to always be with him.
