It has been said that leaders are born not made, because leaders are people that are willing to sacrifice for the good of the society. They are people that sleep but their ears still hear the cry of the people. Their thinking is always on how to improve the living standard of the people. Like Shakespeare said in Julius Caesar, “When the poor had cried, Caesar had wept,” they are people that are willing to sacrifice their lives and comfort for the general welfare of the society. This is the disposition that Senator (Dr) Ibrahim Kabiru Gaya is imbued with.
It is becoming clearer by the day that when the people of Kano South Senatorial District invested their mandate in the former governor to represent them at the Senate in 2007, political analysts were unanimous that the district was developmental focused that they made a good choice. In the first four years of the former governor at the senate terminating in 2011, the people of the senatorial district and indeed the entire people of Kano State have every reason to thank God for their choice of the senator. He did not only went to the upper chamber of the National Assembly to make laws, but also brought development to the economic hub state of the north in leaps and bounds.
In his first term at the Senate between 2007 and 2011, there was no council area in the 44 local governments of the state that did not benefit from the magnanimity and philanthropy of the lawmaker. He executed constituency projects in all the council areas of the state not just in his constituency or senatorial district alone. This is a feat that is yet to be equalled. At least three (3) blocks of classroom of primary school was provided by the senator and bore hole sited in each of council areas. The senator also provided 300 classroom and 300 desktop computers to all the schools in his Senatorial zone. Senator Gaya provided MSc, MA and PhD scholarship to indigent students to study abroad.
The senator renovate Rano Juma’at mosque at the cost of N 100,900,000:00, 6 district heads houses, 2 of it totally rebuilt while renovated 6 Islamiyya schools. No wonder he beat a sitting senator in the 2007 election and his overwhelming re-election in 2011 was not without good representation at the senate and carrying the people along at home.
Armed with experience that the future belong to the youth, the senator distributed various empowerment items worth N122,000,000.00 in his first tenure and N199,000,000:00 in his second tenure. He distributed 30 vehicles, 50 tricycles 120 motorcycles to the youths in the area to enable them meet their daily needs. Generator sets were distributed to certain category group of the youths of the senatorial district for their small and medium scale businesses. The people of Turawa and Yola in Karaye Local Government as well as Babiri in Tudun Wada will eternally remain grateful to the senator for the network of roads and bridges he has provided them to enable them to take their farm produce outside the area.
If the senator is not a worthy leader, would he spend a whopping seven hundred and ninety six (796) million Naira to construct 33 km roads in Maimakawa, Gaya, Albasu and Takai, 6 km road from Lajawa to Gamarya to Masubar. The senator constructed 3 bridges at Babiri (T/Wada), Turawa and Yola (Karaye) as well as rehabilitate 2 bridges at Tudunwada and Wudi. He also built a 15 km township road network.
Sport has become the means of livelihood for youth; Senator Gaya built Youth and Sports Development Centre. At Kabir Gaya Sports Academy and Computer School, over 1000 students have graduated. The senator distributed sets of jerseys and footballs to all local government areas in his constituency for the youths to be focused in sport and forsake restiveness especially now that security challenges are in the front burner of national discuss. In line with the senator’s large heartedness which is a trait of a leader, some youths who could not participate in sport or get the motorbike he distributed were provided wheelbarrows while sewing machines were purchased for women and middle aged men. The senatorial honorarium also included tricycle machines for women and youth empowerment in the area. Also no fewer that eleven (11) vehicles were given to different categories of people of the senatorial district.
Health sector, one of the paramount sectors in human existence, was not neglected or relegated by the senator, the legislator provided hospital equipments to Wudil, Gaya, Tudun Wada and Takai. He extended this magnanimity to providing skill acquisition centres in Gaya Arewa, Kudu, Kabiya, Karaye, Bebeji, Wudil, Rano and Takai Local Government Areas. This is the true meaning of democracy and if the senator is given the chance to be governor, what will the people see or who will quantify the level of development in the state? If the senator can provide 206 computer sets to various secondary schools and made available three internet centres with 25 computers each and standby generators to Gaya and Rano as a lawmaker, can you imagine what he can do for the people as a governor?
To ensure that water the essential thing for life is available for irrigation and livestock in the area, Senator Gaya provided 206 solar powered boreholes and over 301 hand pumps boreholes to other constituencies in the state. With his vast experience having served in different committees in the Senate such as Senate Agriculture Committee, he boosted agricultural production in the area by providing additional 7,000 irrigation water pumps and 5,000 tube wells and 4000 3 inch irrigation pumps for the people of the area.
The senator did not only want the youths to stay off restiveness by leaving them in the lurch, he also provided 472 youths from the state with jobs and not just his senatorial district.
As Nigeria experiences epileptic power supply crippling many businesses, he intensified effort at illuminating the area by providing solar street lights to many streets in the state and 500 poles of system already installed and still counting. He provided 25 5000kv transformers to PHCN in addition to contributing Naira 750,000, 000:00 to PHCN sub-station in Karfi Maiyaji.
Senator Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya is indeed a leader who should be supported to lead the state to greater heights. He demonstrated his love for the people at the last Sallah Durbar in the capital city when he braved the security challenges sacrificing his life when state officials stayed away. This singular demonstration of loyalty to the people ranks him a step above his contemporaries. As a senator, he is not that he visits the electorate once in four years like others who visit the people when they are canvassing for vote only to attend to their legislative haven between the three arm zones. He is now a political rallying point of the North-west zone of the country. He is a personage known for humility and respect for elders, contemporaries and subordinates. His loyal loyalty to his party from ANPP to APC is unrivalled, this is a credential that lovers of Kano should crave to sustain, and the time to reciprocate his commitment is now.
