Shock us with the facts

Aminu-Waziri-Tambuwal-8House of Representatives Speaker, Aminu Tambuwal, has revealed that there is “damning proof” of sleazes committed by President Goodluck Jonathan’s government. Speaking two days ago in Port Harcourt, Rivers state, where APC presidential candidate Muhammadu Buhari opened his campaign for the Feb. 14 presidential election, Tambuwal said the House had uncovered “mindboggling” corruption perpetrated by the government at the centre.

“From the privileged position of Speaker of the House of Representatives that I’ve presided over for three and half years, we oversaw the current government and what we saw and what we are still seeing is mind-boggling”, he declared. According to him, information about the rot in government was obtained by the House during its oversight functions, saying Nigerians would be shocked if told the magnitude of the sleaze.

If the time and circumstances under which Speaker Tambuwal made his ‘revelation’ were different, most Nigerians would certainly believe him.More so as he is in the best of position to know. However, though still the House Speaker, Tambuwal has left the President’s ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and teamed up with the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC). The latter has given him the ticket to contest the governorship of Sokoto state.

One more reason why it is difficult for people to believe him is why he waited all this time to make the disclosure. There can be only one reason – politics. He wanted to rubbish the party and government he once was part of. This is obvious from his next remarks: “From the information available to us, we don’t deserve the current type of leadership that we have at the centre; Nigeria deserves better leadership and by the grace of God and will be exemplified by General Muhammadu Buhari. His records speak for him.

“When I defected to the APC, many people were surprised and asked how could I leave a ruling party for an opposition party?” He then said the country would develop faster with the opposition APC than with the ruling PDP, noting that the Jonathan administration was not serious about governance.

Another reason is the flippancy of our political leaders. They have this tendency of making sweeping allegations that they cannot prove. We are afraid, without any concrete proof Tambuwal’s allegation will be dismissed as a wild one. Truth be told, the Jonathan administration is notorious for its tolerance of corruption. Indeed, the President last month admitted that his party and government have “created more millionaires and billionaires in 15 years” than any government before his. Also he once said helping oneself to the public treasury was not corruption but simply “stealing”.

However, any allegations of sleaze coming from someone holding an exalted position such as that of the House Speaker should be backed by facts. We recall that one time Speaker Dimeji Bankole was given to making unsubstantiated corruption charges including one the former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s ministers helped themselves to donor funds meant for Nigeria. Tambuwal should shock us with his facts.
