The Gidan Magana community in Shagari Local Government Area of Sokoto State, has appealed to the Federal Government to compensate the people whose land was used for the construction of Shagari Dam.
Malam Magaji Umaru, the Village Head of the area, made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recently in Gidan Magana.
“Our land, which we were using for farming, our houses, as well as economic trees have been washed away by the construction of the dam,” Umaru said.
He said that life had been difficult for the entire community as the people had not been compensated.
“I have over 10 farmlands, various economic trees and houses which have been destroyed but till this moment, I have not received a kobo as compensation.”
He explained that proper compensation would enable the people to start new life for the well being of the community.
Umaru also called on the state government to construct a hospital, primary school and roads in the area, to enhance its socio economic and political growth.
“Our children don’t go to school any longer because ours has been taken over since the construction of the dam,” he said.(NAN)
