A member of the National Assembly (NASS) Task Force on Monday, assaulted a lawmaker, Hon.Umar Muda Lawal representing Toro federal constituency of Bauchi State (APC) and a journalist with OrderPaper Nigeria.
The said incident happened in NASS premises just as the lawmaker who was driving into the complex saw the Sergeant At Arms, Labaran Usman, throwing punches and kicking Mrs. Lizzy Chirkpi, a journalist attached to National Assembly, who writes for OrderPaper Nigeria.
All efforts by other passersby and the lawmaker in question to bring the situation under control proved abortive as Labaran Usman, aka, Gumama continued punching the woman in question and even struggled with her to removed her car key from the ignition.
According to Chirkpi, “I was waiting in my car this morning at about 11:45am directly opposite behind the House of Representatives new building car park. I noticed a black hilux vehicle packed behind me and was horning, though I thought it was a friend so I didn’t bother to come down from my car to see who the person was. Then I noticed a man in black jean and T-shirt came to meet and I recognized he was someone I knew.
“Immediately, he shouted at me hey hey, why did you park here and I told him was waiting for my colleague who went to the press corps centre to get camera that we want to go outside and use. Just as I was trying to explain he interrupted no, no madam I say you can’t park here, this is not car park. And then as I insisted that I would not move my car not until the person I’m waiting for comes, he went and started deflelating my tyres.
“So I rushed out of the car to stop him but at that point he started pushing and kicking because I stopped him from deflating the tyres.
“He kept pushing and kicking me, saying for questioning his authority, he must must deflating the tyres. At that point of trying to stop him from deflating my tyres he went for my car key and I rushed back to remove it, this time David Okoh my colleague hurriedly entered the car and as he was trying to stop Usman from removing the key, he also pushed him and the camera and mic tag fell to the ground and broke.
“He continued to punch me and drag my shirt and at that point the lawmaker (Hon. Umar Lawal Muda) who was watching from his car got out and came to my rescue but that did not deter Usman, he even pushed the lawmaker backward and started hauling insults on him.
The lawmaker who was infuriated by Usman’s action then asked me to enter his car and we made away to report the matter at the office of the Director Sergeant-At -Arms.The secretary to the Director of the Sergeant-At-Arms then asked one of the staff to lead us to the Deputy Director’s office.
“On reaching there, we met the Deputy Director, Dennis Imaji and the lawmaker narrated what happened and I also a stated my side of the story”.
