Senator Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya, representing Kano South Senatorial District, said he has secured the release of ninety six prisoners in his senatorial zone.
Gaya, who is the chairman senate committee on local government, made the disclosure at a meeting with journalists tagged NUJ Platform, at the NUJ press centre in Kano state yesterday.
He said the inmates were released from various prisons across the senatorial district after settling their fines amounting to N600,000.
According to him, “Part of my project is touching the lives of the less privileged positively. It is at this juncture that I wish to tell you that I secured the release of 96 inmates from various prisons across my senatorial zone. You will be surprised to know that some of the inmates were fined not less than N5, 000 but could not pay due to the current economic situation in the country.”
“When I got to know about the situation, I set up a committee recently which came up with the names of the 96 inmates who were languishing in the prisons because they could not pay the fine,” he said.
The senator added that the beneficiaries had since been released and reunited with their families.
Gaya also appealed to all Nigerians to come out en mass and vote the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the forthcoming general elections in the country.
