The Senate yesterday resolved to investigate the design of resurfacing of Akanu Ibiam International Airport Enugu awarded three years ago.
It also called on the Ministry of Aviation to as a matter of urgency, commence the resurfacing and reconstruction of the runway of the airport.
It further called on the authorities concerned to also extend the length of runway of the Enugu airport.
Moving the motion on the need to reconstruct the runway of the airport, Senator Chukwuka Utazi noted that the condition of the airport runway had become so bad that pilots now urge their passengers to say prayers while the plane lands.
He further announced that pilots now urge passengers who could influence the reconstruction of the runway to do so to forestall accident.
He described the runway of the airport as filled with “potholes and crack pits making the runway takeoff and landing a bumpy and frightening undertaking.”
He said the technical appraisal showed that “due to high water table of the airport, water percolates and gets trapped between upper asphalt and bottom concrete and this retention of water weakens asphalt and create potholes.”
In his contribution, Sen Bala Na’Allah, who is also an aviation expert, described the airport in its present form as technically unsafe.
He said there is need for the authorities to move fast to reclaim the airport runway since it was about the only international airport in the South East.
