The caucus of senators who are fighting for the Senate Leader, Ahmad Lawan, to become the Senate President in the 9th Assembly has vowed that on June 11, no force can stop their candidate from emerging as the Senate President, despite criticism of the choice of Lawan by some senators.
Speaking to journalists, the Spokesman of Ahmad Lawan for Senate President caucus in the 9th Session, Sabi Abdullahi (APC, Niger North), who is also the spokesman of the senate, said those protesting against Lawan becoming the Senate President are few to make any difference.
Sabi, who failed to disclose the number of APC and PDP senators supporting their course, said that some PDP senators are sympathetic to their agenda, adding that no senators wants to have the same rancorous experience which characterized the 8th Assembly.
He said the majority will always remain majority while minority will remain minority, but assured that the opposition will be carried along in this scheme of things in the 9th senate.
He said the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership have taken the bold step by coming up ahead of time to make their choice of candidate for Senate President known to all, saying it has saved the party of the controversy that trailed the last election of the senate leadership.
He denied the statement by one of the contenders for the Senate President, Ali Ndume, that the APC senators were disappointed when the chairman of the party, Adams Oshiomhole, announced Lawan as the choice candidate of the party, saying the declaration by the party chairman came as a relief to over 95% of the senators.
According to him, “at the dinner attended by many of the APC governors and most of the Senators-elect on the platform of the party, the APC national chairman in a family affair tone, recommended Senator Ahmed Lawan for the position of President of the 9th Senate which was spontaneously and instantaneously applauded by the senators – elect without any dissenting voice.
“It is not good for people to peddle lies, I was at the dinner along with other APC senators-elect, the national chairman of our party, Adams Oshiomhole , never made any announcement or submission that can be described by anybody as imposition.
“He in the spirit of avoiding what happened in 2015 ,along with the presidency , gave the required direction for the party as regards the position of President of the 9th Senate by in a very persuasive and convincing tone, recommended Senator Ahmed Lawan for the position.
“The recommendation was spontaneously and instantaneously , applauded by all the APC senators- elect in attendance without anybody dissenting.
“So for Senator Ndume to later tell a story of imposition and shock to Nigerians through his media briefing , is nothing but being economical with the truth”, he said.
“I don’t want to give you any number but I can assure you that Insha Allah , when the 9th Senate is inaugurated, Ahmed Lawan will emerge as its President.
“What happened in 2015 , will not happen because APC as a party has learnt its lesson”, he stated.
