Ten persons including the traditional ruler of Okenwo Agbenema-Ife, Chief Musa Edibo and his wife have been killed in a fresh attack by gunmen suspected to be herdsmen.
Several houses were also razed down in separate attacks on Agbenema, Aj’Ichekpa, Opada and Iyade vllages in the eastern flank of Kogi State.
The assailants who were armed with sophisticated weapons had hidden in the bushes around those villages before launching the attack yesterday
in Omala Local Government Area.
Our correspondent gathered that, the herdsmen whose mode of operation is to set the houses of their victims ablaze and lie in wait, before opening fire on the fleeing inhabitants.
A local hinted that the Administrator of Omala local government, Hon. Ibrahim Aboh escaped the attack by whiskers.
He said that it was clear that the aim of the suspected herdsmen was to kill them and take
over their ancestral homes, saying the herders have razed down Ojuwo, Ajomayeigbi, Iyade,
Agbenema and Opada villages so that they could use the lands for cattle colonies.
According to the local source, a coordinated war is raging simultaneously in most villages in Omala , Dekina, and Bassa local governments, maintaining that their people are systematically eliminated while nobody seems to be doing anything about it.
“ Since the attacks begun, we cannot go to the farms or markets, thereby finding it difficult to get something to eat, noting that if drastic measures are not taken to nip the problem in the bud, the matter would soon get out of hand.
It would be recalled that on Saturday, the state governor, Yahaya Bello visited the crisis prone area of Oganenigu where over 25 persons were massacred while many houses were razed down, promising to bring the culprits to justice.
When contacted, spokesman of the Kogi Police Command, William Aya said he would contact the divisional police officer in charge of the area and get back to the media.
