The Chairman, Independent National Election Commission, INEC, Prof Mahmood Yakubu will on Monday, November 9, formally hand over to the most senior National Commissioner at the Commission.
The development is sequel to the expiration of his tenure of office for the first term.
Although Prof Yakubu has been re-nominated for a second term in office by President Muhammadu Buhari, he is however yet to be screened and confirmed by the Senate.
The handing over ceremony by the INEC Chairman has been scheduled to hold next week Monday by 11am at the conference hall of INEC headquarters in Zambezi street, Maitama, Abuja.
The Chief Press Secretary, CPS, to the INEC Chairman, Mr Rotimi Oyekanmi, in notice of invitation to the media yesterday, said, “Dear colleagues, You are all cordially invited to the Hon Chairman’s handing over ceremony to be held as follows: Date: Monday 9th November 2020. The tenure of office (first term) of Prof Yakubu expired mid-last month.
He was however renominated for a second term in office by President Buhari on October 27 through a letter which had been sent to the Senate for approval.
The statement, which was signed by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina reads, “President Muhammadu Buhari has presented the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu, for a second term in office.
“In a letter to President of the Senate, Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan, the President said in accordance with the provision of Section 154 (1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), “I am pleased to present for confirmation by the Senate, the nomination of Professor Mahmood Yakubu for appointment as Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for a second and final term.”
“Prof Yakubu was first appointed by President Buhari in November 2015”, the statement said.
