Rainfall destroys houses in Delta Community, 23 residents injured

Amidst palpable fear and tension of Covid-19 Pandemic, heavy rainfall on Monday night in Torugbene Community in Burutu Local Government Area of Delta state destroyed no fewer than 200 houses in the area, while 23 Persons were feared fatally injured
Reports said that though no life was lost, but the situation created unfavorable atmosphere as both Public and Private buildings were Smashed open or de- roofed by the storm as the affected victims are currently being treated at various hospitals in the local government area.
A Victim, Mrs Wariagbe Ere Temene who spoke to Journalists in the area in her hospital bed, said that electricity pole pulled down by the storm and fell on her legs including her waist, adding that she cannot walk as expected while another Victim, Mr Awini Ekedetoru however called on the state government to Come to aid as they have rendered homeless and injured.
Speaking to Journalists in the area, the Joint Monitoring Team on the disaster, headed by Mr J.O. Conga and Engr Parmor Keepright, Community Secretary and Elder respectfully, after assessing the level of damage, said” we believe this is a tornado which swept across the Community, over 200 houses, Churches in the area which include: Torugbene Grammar school, Foukoro Primary School buildings were Smashed and destroyed, we are appealing to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and good Nigerians to please send relief materials to the victims who have been rendered homeless, we were all observing the stay at home order when this disaster befell us, many of us have been displaced and are living in temporary huts, we need food, drugs and sleeping materials to cushion the effects of the storm, We also appeal to the state government to assist Victims rebuild their houses”
Also, the Chairman of the Local Government Council, God knows Angele Confirmed the incident, and appealed to the public spirited individuals to donate relief materials to the victims
Meanwhile, food vendors in Abraka Community have decried the economic setback through the lockdown by the state government, disclosing that hunger is currently telling on them after they have spent their capital for feeding
They have however called on well meaning Indigenes of the area to Come to their aid and save them from further starvation, adding” we beg the state government to do something about the situation because we are hungry and we cannot feed again, all our Capital has been spent and we have no plans to have more because of the lockdown especially in the stay at home order by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, we are hungry oh! “
Speaking to Journalists, the state Commissioner for Special duties, Mr More pirah who also Confirmed the incident, said that the state government was Committed to the welfare of the people, adding that relief materials would be sent to them and ensured that the injured ones are treated and taken care of.

It was gathered that riverine areas of the state during the rainfall, witnessed total devastation of economic crops including houses that were already dilapidated, especially private buildings
