Education is an investment for human and economic development of a nation. As a matter of fact, Education is fundamental to sustainable Development of every nation.
According to Google, Education is the process of acquiring knowledge, skills, attitudes, interest, abilities, competence and the cultural norms of a society by people and to transmit this life to the coming generations so as to enhance perpetual development of the society.
Apparently, the importance of Education in National Development in its entire aspects can’t be overemphasized. In fact, in this digital world, Quality Education is of cardinal importance to any nation who is willing to progress along with developed countries.
Provision of inclusive quality education for all levels of social class with no influence by ethno-religious sentiments, cultural norms, rural areas segregation, disabilities, among others will, not only develop the nation’s economy but as well as drastically reduce the rate of insecurity, unemployment, bad leadership, regression, social vices, etc
Sustainable Development Goal 4 aims to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. The reason as to the agenda is not far fetched.
An Education for all provides every citizen with adequate information, skills, knowledge and character to thrive in their immediate societies.
The level at which priority is placed on Education across the globe varies sharply from country to country. Annual budget for Education in developed countries differs significantly from developing or underdeveloped countries.
Also, government supports for developmental research, motivation for education stakeholders and provision of adequate learning facilities in designated learning environments could be said to be uninspiring in Nigeria.
This situation has hindered effective learning processes which has directly resulted to ill-trained graduates who are ordinarily expected to contribute to their immediate societies the knowledge, skills and moralities they have acquired in the process of learning.
For a country as giant and highly resourceful as Nigeria to grow, majority of her citizens have to be up-to-date with the global technological, economical and political progression. This is only achievable when quality education is ensured and decentralized across the country.
Parts of the root problems facing the country are uninspiring level of illiteracy and lack of quality Education among Nigerians which have birthed a rise in birth rate, recycling of bad leaders, social vices, nonparticipation in Politics, technological dependency, corruption, unemployment, etc.
When a nation’s human resources are well refined, educated, updated, highly skilled and resourceful, the country tends to develop uncompromisingly.
At higher institutions, applied researches tailored towards economy growth, revenue generation, resources diversification, security, unemployment reduction, empowerment and national development at large should be encouraged, highly sponsored and largely embarked on.
With numerous number of scholars and graduates in Nigeria in different disciplines cut across all aspects of national development, the level of technological and economical dependency, to mention a few, ought to be minimal.
The status quo requires an urgent attention to the level of education in the country, strategic education review, feasible implementation of expanded education dispensation, possibility of highly funded education, among other strategic and important actions primarily towards nation building.
In this regard, the following recommendations are highlighted:
— The government of the Federation and States with the support of the Local Government Areas should ensure a reasonable increase in the current annual budget for Education in the country.
— The government should establish more enabling and highly equipped learning environments across the country to accommodate more Nigerians conducively.
— In partnership with the authorities of higher institutions, the government should enforce the local production of some imported products to encourage quality education, practical experience in schools, local production and self-reliance.
— To encourage continued productivity and seriousness in students, outstanding graduates should be provided with job opportunities and other motivating factors irrespective of their social class or family background
Curriculum Planners/Education Stakeholders
The current education curriculum should be reviewed thoroughly to capture the present realities of the global world of work and operation
— Teachers should be trained in line with the global digital requirements.
— Applied researches tailored towards development by scholars should be given paramount importance and be fully funded to ensure seamless and untainted conduct.
NGOs/Education Support Movements
— Financial and material contributions should be provided for schools to ensure and maximize learning expectations
— Education programmes and initiatives tossed on practical aspects and feasible strategies to solving national problems should be put in place
— While realizing that education is a key factor to changing the narrative of onsought happenings in Nigeria, students/youths should strive unrelentingly to be well educated, informed and productive
— They should tailor their education strength and knowledge capacities towards promoting the unity, economy, security strength and the country’s reputation nationally and internationally
Nigeria needs a functional educational system for sustainable national development processes as a functional educational system decentralized across the country will provide sound and quality education by equipping majority of Nigerians with latest science and technology to solving pressing national problems.
