Psychiatrist calls for establishment of more rehabilitation centers

A Consultant Psychiatrist, Dr. Shehu Sale, has called on authorities and donor agencies to facilitate establishment of more rehabilitation centers due to their valuable contributions to the society.
Sale, who is the Medical Director of Federal Neuron Psychiatric Hospital (FNPH) Kware in Sokoto state stated this in his lecture at 19th Annual Lecture series of Federal University Birnin Kebbi, emphasized that curing drug addiction has less cost than managing persons in remands homes.
In his lecture on a topic tagged ‘’ Implications of Drug Abuse: Medical Perspective ‘’ Sale noted that rehabilitation centers provided chains of opportunities to substance abusers, mentally retarded persons and other related individuals.
He said centers provided occupational therapy for persons to be engaged on productive life besides treatments while they serves as skill acquisition grounds for training of other normal individuals.
Sale, an Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Guest Speaker at the event said substance abuse is misusing of any drugs and consumables outside prescriptions by experts and regulations.
He said such abuse causes clinical impairment such as health problems, disabilities and person’s failure to meet major livelihood responsibilities.
‘’Illegal consumption of substances led to affecting central nervous system: acts on the brain and spinal code which alters the way person think and behaves.
‘’It is also a major potential to prevent, cure of diseases or enhance physical or mental wellbeing of a person,” Dr Sale said.
Sale explained research indicated that about 275 million people used illicit drugs such as cannabis.
‘’Worldwide annual prevalence of illicit drugs used is estimated at 5.6 percent and Nigeria had a prevalence estimation of 14.4 percent.
‘’Harmful use of alcohol results in 3.3 million deaths in the world annually and about 31 million have drug related disorders.
“11 million people inject drugs and 1.3 million are living with HIV, 5.5 million with hepatitis C and 1 million both HIV and Hepatitis C worldwide’’ Sale said study revealed.
The Psychiatrist added that substance abuse has genetic and social cause linage and urged parents as well as stakeholders to redouble efforts on sanitizing the society.
He commended federal government on its intervention, response and policies on treatment as well as rehabilitation programmes noting no fewer 11 federal institutions renders active services.
The Medical Director further lauded Sokoto, Niger, Benue and Kebbi state on establishment and managing rehabilitation centers and urged others to emulate the efforts.
