From Matthew Aramunde, Lagos

For the timely intervention of the Area E Commander Mr.Dan Okoro an Assistant Commissioner of Police (AC) and his men, the 2014 election into office of new executives of the Association of Spare Parts Marketers and Dealers Association ASPMDA Trade Fair Unit would have been marred by protest by some of its members. As early as 8am members were seen in their hundreds milling around the venue of the contest, however what was envisaged to be a peaceful conduct later turned out into verbal war of words between supporters of opposing parties snowballing into slogans demanding the outright cancellations of the elections by some aggrieved members.

The protesting members in a chat with our correspondent revealed that they are premising their protest on the fact that the voters list has been doctored by the electoral body in connivance with the outgoing President Tony Ohagwu whom they alleged is trying to impose his lackey on the association

They queried how the registered members of the association whom they claim is seven thousand six hundred overnight rose to eleven thousand a situation they say was to enable the outgoing President to achieving his clandestine motives.

To buttress the claim of the protesting members, one of the contestant Hon Ngozi Emechebe alleged that his name and about fifty-five of his supporters were deliberately expunged from the list of registered voters and suggested that the elections be conducted block by block as he is afraid that mercenaries voters were imported to making sure the former President man wins at all cost.

The Area Commander who had all the while listened to their complaints expressed disgust that in spite of the numerous meetings he held with all the contestants in his office where he counseled them to put their house in order and allow for a level playing ground,he is taken aback by the rowdiness that greeted his arrival and stressed the need for all and sundry to exhibit some sense of decorum in situation like this.

“I must express my disappointment that in spite of the series of meeting I held with you in my office and the advise i proffer were adhered to the rowdiness I beheld on my arrival wouldn’t have been called for. I think there are certain guidelines that would ensure decency that would have been put in place before now” he noted Calm however was restored and the election procedures initiated and as at the time of filing in this report, members were seen casting their votes in an orderly manner
