Major General John Gbor (Rtd) yesterday emerged as the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) presidential candidate, with Jerry Chukwueke, as his running mate for the 2019 general election through election by the party’s delegates from the 36 states of the federation.
It would be recalled that late Chukwemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu was APGA’s pioneer presidential candidate since inception, after which the party has not had any presidential candidate on its platforms, until now that Gbor emerged its candidate.
Declaring the adoption of Gen. Gbor and Chukwueke by the delegates in Abuja yesterday, APGA’s National Chairman, Victor Ike Oye, noted that the emergence of Major Gen. Gbor as the party’s presidential candidate ahead of 2019 election was an indication that the party has taken its position in the league of national political parties in the country.
“It is no longer speculation, APGA has gotten a presidential candidate. He is a retired major general, with a Ph.D. from one of the renewed Universities in United States of America. Again our Vice President is a technocrat and an international businessman with many degrees in Economics”, he said.
Oye boasted that APGA has concluded plans to win governorship seats in eight out of the 36 states of the federation in the forthcoming general election in line with his earlier prediction for the party when he assumed office as national chairman.
According to Oye, the new states the party is targeting are Abia, Imo, Nassarawa and Benue. Other states include Zamfara, Enugu.
The adoption of Maj. Gen. Gbor as presidential candidate and his running mate, Chukwueke, respectively by the delegates were done through affirmation.
In his acceptance speech, Gbor said his administration will ensure that lives and property of all Nigerians are secured, adding that his mission is to unite Nigerians under the platform of APGA.
He said he will pursue a five point agenda that will comprise True Federalism, Security, Fiscal Restructuring, Social Agenda among others.
Gbor warned that his administration will not tolerate the killings of any Nigerian under whatever guise, and added that such would not be tolerated in the country.
“We will restore the citizen lost of trust in the nation’s leadership through good governance, he noted.
Also speaking, the Deputy Governor of Anambra state, Nkem Okeke, who represented the Governor, said the party has done excellently in Anambra state, adding that there is need to replicate the magic of Governor Willie Obiano in other states.
