Residents of Ogwashi Uku Kingdom near Asaba in Delta State on Tuesday hauled abuses on officials of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) over their continued stay in darkness for twenty years.
The angry residents mainly youths, assembled at various newspaper stands from where they took on the BEDC officials as their worst enemies.
It was gathered that residents of affected areas, especially those residents around the NDLEA office have been thrown in darkness for over twenty years following alleged refusal o BEDC management to replace the vandalized equipment that serve the areas.
One of the residents of the affected areas,Nwaite Fredrick accused BEDC staff of deliberately distabilizing the affected areas by removing some parts in the transformer serving the areas, adding”I don’t think our transformer was vandalized what we learnt is that the BEDC staff was the one that removed something from our transformer and what they removed from our own is the one they used to repair the broken down ones and they are not still working.”
Sources alleged that the residents had on many occasions contributed financially towards the lighting of the community including donations of various transformers by well-meaning sons and daughters of the community for the development to no avail as either the equipment are vandalized or stolen by unidentified persons.
But BEDC Public Relations Officer, Mrs Esther Okolie dispelled as untrue allegations against officials of the Electricity Distribution Company, adding Ogwashi Uku community was provided with light some years back but had a set= back following various transformers that were vandalized by unknown thieves.
Also speaking, Dac Chukwudi a resident of one of the quarters in the community said,” immediately after our own broke down, other quarters started having light even when our neighbours visited BEDC office in Ogwashi Uku to lodge complaints what they told them our transformer located at Dac Chukwudi Junction was vandalized.”
