From Matthew Aramunde, Lagos
the Eze Aku-oma 1 of Ebenator in Anambra State, Dr Innocent Echefu has expressed disappointment at politicians in Nigeria saying they have let down the masses who voted them into office.
He made the remark at his office in Mushin a suburb of Lagos in a chat with our correspondent in the light of ongoing jostling for the nation’s presidency ahead 2015.
The traditional ruler wondered if the average Nigeria politician is even aware that rascality (be it executive or legislative), double dealing, and negligence of leaders have ways of catching up with them at least. He wondered why we do not have in our politicians’ statesmen who at any point place the larger interests above their personal conveniences.
“With the colossal amount we are raking in from our oil sales, our roads are in deplorable state, the hospitals are mere clinics; the educational sectors are in comatose, power to assist cottage industries is epileptic, our youths roam the streets without jobs for them” he lamented.
Worried by the spate of mudslinging, subterfuge that are trade mark of the average Nigeria politicians whenever an election period approaches, Echefu said he is hopeful that one day there will be the likes of the late Mandela who voluntarily stepped down as President when he could have converted his larger-than-life stature into extended, if not permanent rule rather what we are confronted with are politicians not willing to forfeit the privileges of office in order to promote enduring values.
Speaking further he says what is most worrisome that the is facing the nation is that it’s torn apart by the desperate hustle of its political class at any cost, the electorate caught by the bug of docility look on helplessly as these vampires suck away the soul of the nation.
On a rather sad note the traditional ruler said as long as the electorate who sings the praises of those pilfering their commonwealth and fail to see beyond their material comfort, the reprobate political class will in no longer distance bring the nation’s roof crashing down on every body.
